Congradulations to Georgy Shlyapnikov, Konstantin Musikhin, Tatyana Kalugina, and David Volkov on the 100th anniversary of HPI.

2022-12-19

The San Francisco Museum and Archives of Russian Culture congratulates its graduates Georgy Shlyapnikov, Konstantin Musikhin, Tatyana Kalugina, and David Volkov on the 100th anniversary of the Harbin Polytechnic Institute (HPI).

As soon as the direct railway line connecting the east and west (the Chinese Eastern Railway and the Great Siberian Route) was completed in 1903, the question of opening a higher specialized technical educational institution in Harbin arose.

Founded in 1920 in Harbin, the Russo-Chinese Technical School immediately adopted the curriculum of higher education institutions of the Russian Empire. Instruction was conducted in Russian by experienced professors steeped in pre-revolutionary educational traditions. One-year preparatory Russian language courses were offered to Chinese students.

On April 2, 1922, the technical school was transformed into the Russian-Chinese Polytechnic Institute with a five-year term of basic education, and in 1928, after China expelled Soviet employees, the institute was renamed the Harbin Polytechnic Institute.

Back in 2020, the Museum of Russian Culture prepared several articles for the 100th anniversary of the HIT. They are available on the website of the Museum of Russian Culture in San Francisco: "On the 100th Anniversary of the Founding of the Harbin Institute of Technology".
